The Challenge

In this economy, we’re constantly being fed videos on how to make money, fast. Not only are these methods clickbait, but also almost can never be done over night, require commitment or they’re just boring. But if we look at the people around us, we are all in need for help with something. Fixing the IKEA table,  helping someone pick up heavy groceries, etc. How can we connect people to each other in the form of easy, efficient help?

The Solution

A platform that turns your spare time into money, skill or good karma by connecting you to people near you that need your help. Essentially a job marketplace that believes your time is worth money, learning new skills or doing good for people, or most importantly, access.

Spare works like this: You can swipe through jobs near you and are instantly connected to someone that likes your profile aka would like to get your help. Both parties can get the job done in the form of cash or a skill barter. And that means, you can get paid for the job in cash or the user can choose to pay you through a traded skill. You helped them do a cat photoshoot as a student photographer, they help review your portfolio as a recruiter at Google. Spare keeps the transaction simple.

This product-forward brand makes it easy to access the spare world by putting up job bulletin boards around apartment buildings, spare newspaper with job listings across neighborhoods and creating a seamless app to help you stay connected with what’s needed in your community. Other assets include social media, downloadable QR codes to print and put up your own jobs or availability on Spare bulletin boards and a notification system that connects with your Google Calendar to inform of potential matches, messages, availability and more.

Visual Identity

The Logo embodies this idea of exchange between two people in two places, abstracted into two or more shapes in motion, swapping within one logotype. Accompanying the moving Logotype is a Logomark. The letter ‘S’ with arrows showing the same idea in a static format.

The visual identity expands with an iconographic system representing all sorts of work opportunities that exist around us. And because Spare finds a way to systemize these sparse opportunities into one structured product, the expanded identity does the same by giving a grid and behavior structure to these icons. The color system is full of personality and friendly, just like a good neighbor, and the typefaces ‘Tosh A’ by Black Foundry and ‘Gilroy’ by Radomir Tinkov are simplified and limited to move seamlessly between Brand and Product.

To add a layer of delight to the Identity, a set of 3D illustrations were added to emphasize moments of celebration within specific Product interfaces. For e.g. When you connect with someone for a job or when your collected amount is redeemable at certain locations and experiences. A custom skin was created for these illustrations using the same color family.
